Schütz: St Matthew Passion

Saturday 31 March 2012, 7.30 pm

Wellington Cathedral of St Paul
Cnr Molesworth and Hill St
Wellington

Directed by Michael Stewart

Along with the aptly-named Schwanengesang, his epic setting of Psalm 119, Schütz’s three settings of the Passion can be considered the valedictory works of the grand old man of German music. Written in his eighties, the seemingly austere a capella writing belies a deep emotional reaction to the familiar text, and is an obvious precursor to Bach’s famous works. Watch this space for 2013!

This concert was part of the 2012 Subscription Series.
